Whitney teacher charged
allegedly sexually assaulting a female student.
The 46-year-old man denied the charge and several other offences which allegedly took place between September, 1988 and December, 1996 in Smith's Parish.
He was charged with intruding upon the privacy of five girls in such a manner that was likely to insult, alarm or offend them and did so.
The first three girls, whose privacy is alleged to have been intruded upon between September 1, 1995, and December 31, 1996, are now 15, 15 and 14-years-old.
He allegedly intruded upon the privacy of the two other females, now 18 and 24, between January, 1995, and June, 1996, and September, 1988, and April, 1990, respectively.
The man was further charged with unlawfully and indecently assaulting the 24-year-old between September, 1988 and April, 1990, and sexually assaulting one of the 15-year-olds between September and December of last year.
Lawyer Richard Hector, who is representing the man, told the court he had sent a letter to the prosecution requesting "certain particulars'' but had not yet seen them.
He provided a copy of the letter to the court which Crown Counsel Leighton Rochester noted was dated May 14.
Mr. Rochester said the letter was being "carefully considered'' and would be "addressed in due course''.
Mr. Hector said his client had been suspended from work for six months with pay and he said he considered this to be a waste of public funds.
"Don't they know what their case is?'' he asked. "The taxpayer is paying money for this man and I would like to have the particulars.'' Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered the prosecution to answer Mr. Hector's request.
"Justice can't be done without him knowing what he is alleged to have done,'' Mr. Francis said.
He released the man on $500 bail and set the matter down for trial on August 7.
