The 65-year-old woman was attacked in the early hours of Saturday after a man climbed in her bedroom window, threatened her and proceeded to rape her despite her cries.

He then escaped.

The woman, who has not been named, immediately called the Police, who have set up a major incident room as they try to track down the assailant.

The victim was taken to hospital for examination but was not detained. Apart from the sexual assault, she was unhurt.

And Police have issued a warning to female residents about the dangers of leaving windows unlocked and open.

A spokesman said women should lock all windows and doors, especially when they are inside and at night.

Those living in ground floor apartments should take extra care in their security measures, the spokesman added.

In Saturday's incident, the woman had just retired for the night in her ground floor apartment when the attack happened.

"Just after 3.30 a.m., as the woman lay in bed, she saw her bedroom window being raised and a man climbing inside,'' the spokesman said. "She screamed at him to go away, but undeterred he jumped on the bed and clamping a hand over her mouth, threatened her and seriously sexually assaulted her.

"When finished, he climbed out of the bedroom and fled.'' Nothing was stolen in the assault.

Despite her ordeal, the woman managed to give Police a detailed description of the man. He is described as black, with medium to dark brown skin, full lips, of medium build and five feet nine inches to five feet ten inches tall.

Clean shaven, he wore a black or dark coloured jacket -- possibly with a hood -- shirt and pants and dark-coloured knitted gloves.

The Police are appealing for help from the public as they hunt for the attacker.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Con. Terry Maxwell on 299-4326 or Crimestoppers on 1-800-623-8477.
