27-year-old Devonshire man who pleaded guilty to 16 offences including
Shannon Dane Somersall, of Derwent Lane, pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to him in Magistrates' Court.
Somersall was charged with attempting to break into Richardson's Restaurant on March 1 and assaulting a Police officer.
Sgt. Cyril Plant, prosecuting, said Mr. Kenneth Trott, owner of Richardson's Restaurant on North Shore Road, was awakened by a noise around 4.30 a.m. As he looked from his bedroom window, situated on the second floor of the restaurant, he saw Somersall who was trying to force one of the restaurant's windows open. Somersall had already removed the fly screen.
Trott called Police who arrested Somersall. He was taken to the Hamilton Police Station, where he refused two requests to empty his pockets and remove his shoes. As officers tried to force him to comply, he punched one and cut his lip. He had to be restrained.
Somersall was also charged with with stealing Verdell Lambert's purse containing $133.50 and three paycheques worth $677.33 in late September.
He then forged Lambert's signature on the cheques and induced three Bank of Butterfield employees to give him $230.34, $269, and $177.99. Lambert reported the cheques stolen. Somersall was arrested later that day.
On December 2, Police were called to King Edward VIII Memorial Hospital after Somersall, who had accompanied an injured man to the emergency room, refused to leave the operating centre.
As Police attempted to escort him away, Somersall, who smelled strongly of alcohol, slapped an officer's face. A violent struggle ensued, more officers arrived, and Somersall was arrested.
Sgt. Plant also reported Police receiving a complaint from Green Lantern manager Mr. Ashton Peters, who said someone came in through a window and stole magazines, cigarettes and other items worth $550.00. Somersall was arrested.
Though first denying the charges, he eventually admitted using a screwdriver to pry open a restaurant window.
Some of the items were recovered.
Friday's court session also saw Somersall charged with the December 21 break-in of a home in which he removed the louvres to get in. Nothing was stolen, Sgt. Plant said, adding that Somersall said he went to Stovell's home because he used to live there and just wanted to get his things back.
Four days later, Sgt. Plant said Somersall went with two other people to Stacey Simpson's home in Hamilton Parish. There, an argument took place in which Somersall hit Simpson with a bottle.
In a second assault, Simpson told Police he was sitting in a truck on Angle Street around 5.30 p.m. on January 7. An argument occurred during which Somersall jumped into Simpson's truck and punched him in the face. Somersall then left but came back shouting death threats.
In a December, 1992 incident, Sgt. Plant said patrolling Police spotted Somersall in a private car travelling east on Middle Road. Knowing he was disqualified from driving, they followed the car to Chaingate Hill where he was stopped.
He refused to go with Police officers. Sgt. Plant said Somersall hit one officer in the groin so hard he needed hospital treatment.
Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis then ordered a social inquiry report, and remanded Somersall in custody until April 15.
