Abolition service scheduled
at Town Square in St. George's.
Held by the Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, the event is seen as an opportunity for residents to focus on August 1, 1834, the abolition of slavery in Bermuda.
Community and Cultural Affairs Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons said: "During the Cup Match period, significant events such as Somers Day and emancipation from slavery are often forgotten or neglected.
"The objective of the service is to disseminate historical information about Bermuda's history and to provide a venue where the Island's population can come together to understand and celebrate an event that changed our history and culture.'' Entertainment will be provided by the St. Paul's AME choir, the Bermuda Regiment Band, the National Dance Theatre and members of Ruth Thomas & Company. Historical material will be on sale and Mrs. Ruzelda Nisbett Severin will be the featured soloist.
The Ministry decided to make the event an annual one at the request of members of the public. The service begins at 8 p.m.
