in another man's face adjourned early yesterday morning because a jury member was ill.

Dwayne Troy Symonds of Random Lane was charged with intending to maim and disfigure Henry William Santucci, 35, of Cedar Avenue, Pembroke with a corrosive fluid, Sulphiric acid.

Mr. Mark Pettingill, representing Symonds, has said his client threw the acid to defend himself from Santucci who was demanding he pay back a $100 debt.

Crown Counsel Mr. Melvin Douglas said Santucci received third degree burns to 90 percent of his face, and additional burns to his arms and hands. The trial will resume on Monday.

FLIGHT GROUNDED FLY Flight grounded Hundreds of British Airways passengers spent an extra night in Bermuda on Thursday when their plane developed hydraulic problems preventing it from taking off.

The British Airways flight was due to leave at 8.10 p.m., but was delayed for almost 24 hours because of the problems.

BA general manager Mr. Philip Troake said the 210 passengers on board the DC-10 were put up for the night at various hotels.

A replacement aircraft left shortly after 7 p.m. yesterday for London. Some passengers left earlier.

The damaged aircraft is expected to leave today.

MP REBUFFED PLN MP rebuffed The Development Applications Board refused the application made by Government backbencher Trevor Moniz to build a swimming pool and storage/dwelling room.

And it advised him to "take appropriate enforcement action to resolve this outstanding issue''.

It added that the refusal was on grounds that the proposed third storey basement in which the storage/dwelling room would be located is contrary to the Bermuda Plan 1992 Planning Statement which states that a residential building shall not exceed a maximum height of two storeys within a Residential 2 Zoning. Mr. Moniz said he did not know why the Board had not given him Planning permission. "It just needs to get sorted out,'' he said. "I don't think there are any major problems. Whether or not I use the spare room as a storage room or dwelling unit depends on what they will give me permission to use the room for.'' BIDDERS SOUGHT GVT Bidders sought The Minister of Works and Engineering, the Hon. Leonard Gibbons is urging local painting contractors to submit tenders for the contracts to paint four Government schools.

The tender is being extended to contractors to carry out the internal and external painting of St. David's Primary, Woodlands, Warwick Secondary and Purvis Primary schools.

This is the second year the tendering process has been used for the painting of Government schools. Twenty three contractors bid on the 11 contracts offered last year.

Mr. Gibbons said he was pleased with the response last year and hoped contractors would "seize the opportunity'' to bid on one of the contracts this year.

"Government is committed to making available Government work to any size firm.'' Full details and tender documents can be obtained from June 5 to June 9 at the Ministry headquarters, third floor of the General Post Office in Hamilton.

ROAD WARNING TFC Road warning Truckers and construction companies have been warned against using their vehicles during restricted hours.

Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess said that between the hours of 7.45 a.m. and 9.15 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, self-propelled construction machines, trailers, combinations of tractors and trailers cannot be on the road.

He also said it is an offence for persons driving vehicles on roads to fail to give right of way to emergency vehicles responding to emergencies, or to follow them within 200 feet while they are responding to an emergency.

These vehicles include Police, ambulances, and Fire Service vehicles.
