"When we went through the policies required by the BIU (Bermuda Industrial Union), construction division, the division we expect to be under, we found our policies met or exceeded (their's),'' he said.

He also said that growth of the air conditioning and engineering company was a big part of the unionisation.

Air Care, which has air-conditioning, plumbing, sheet metal and fire protection divisions, started a decade ago with 11 people. Numbers have since grown to 90, he said.

Of those 90, 45 of the 68 eligible voted to join the union on May 16, the Workers Voice said.

Government labour relations officer Glenn Fubler oversaw the ballot.

Mr. Skinner added that he was impressed with the open, professional approach taken by the union.
