American doctor faces drugs charges
Court.
Louis Perry, 39, of New York, and his wife Donna, were accused of possessing cannabis and drug equipment on September 2.
Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said the doctor was searched by Customs officers at Penno's Wharf, St. George's around 10.20 a.m. on that date.
Perry, whose wife was also searched, refused to hand over a pack of Merit Cigarettes when asked, then ran back toward the cruise ship Dreamward and was pursued by the Customs officers. Sgt. Taylor said when the officers caught up to him he was chewing the contents and swallowed it.
Perry and his wife were taken to their cabin and a search was made at which time a film canister with cannabis inside along with five homemade cigarettes and a pipe were found. Police were called and Perry was arrested along with his wife and taken to St. George's Police Station where the cannabis was found to be .55 grams. But Perry and his wife denied the drugs belonged to him.
He and his wife were charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug equipment. Perry was also charged with obstructing a Police officer in execution of his duty for running away and chewing what he said was medicine for which he had no prescription.
However, in court yesterday Perry admitted to the offences. But his wife pleaded not guilty on both drug charges and no evidence was offered against her. Senior Magistrate Will Francis fined Perry $50 for possessing the drugs, $50 for the drug equipment, and $100 for the obstruction offence.
