Arrest after Police chase

early hours of Saturday on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle from World Distributors in Serpentine Road, Pembroke.

Police say they pursued the man along Canal Road, and caught him as he tried to conceal himself in the bushes near Dellwood Middle School.

Officers had been called to a report of a break-in at the cycle shop at midnight but found nothing was missing.

But they returned at 3 a.m. after a man was spotted stealing a cycle from the premises.

Meanwhile, Marine Police are investigating the theft of two kayaks from a house in Seawall Drive, Sandys, on Friday.

FOCUS ON ISLAND ENVIRONMENT CON Focus on Island environment A day-long conference focusing on Bermuda's environment is to be held this Thursday.

The conference entitled "What Price Paradise: The Limits of Compromise, A Test of Values'', will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Bermuda College.

Discussions and lectures will be held in both the New Hall Lecture Theatre and the Faculty Centre, West Hall.

Topics under discussion will include the Bermuda Biodiversity strategy and action plan, the plight of Bermuda's amphibians, sustainability and sustainable measures for the home, creating art from recycled materials, coral reefs and the biomedical importance of the marine environment.

Environment Minister Terry Lister will deliver the key note address for the conference at 9:45 a.m.

THEFT SENTENCING CRM Theft sentencing A Hamilton Parish man will be sentenced for several acts of theft this week.

Dennis Webster Warner, 47, pleaded guilty to stealing a leather jacket valued at $223 from Gibbons Company on February 7 last year. He also pleaded guilty to stealing a livery cycle from Smatt's valued at $2,000.

Webster had missed two April court dates to answer to the charges and so was arrested on an outstanding warrant this week.

This meant a summary of the leather jacket incident was not before the court so he could not be sentenced.

Webster was not represented by a lawyer, and Acting Senior Magistrate, Edward King remanded him in custody to be sentenced at a later date.

CANCER BOOST APP Cancer boost Rachael Andrade has been appointed Education Officer for the Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health Association. She starts work on June 4 and will be responsible for developing and managing programmes to increase cancer awareness.
