Band to play farewell performance
concert today in front of City Hall.
The Canadian Armed Forces Air Command Band, in Bermuda to take part in ceremonies related to the closure of the Canadian base at Daniel's Head, will perform from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m.
The band, under the musical direction of Capt. Terry O'Connor, is based in Winnipeg and has played all over the world.
Last night, the Air Command Band joined the Bermuda Regiment Band on Front Street for the Beat Retreat ceremony.
Tonight at 9 p.m., the Air Command Band, the Bermuda Regiment Band, and the Bermuda Cadet Pipe Band, joined by members of the Bermuda Police Pipe Band, will take part in Beat Retreat ceremonies at Dockyard.
There will also be a musical festival to commemorate 30 years of Canadian presence at Daniel's Head. It is a farewell by the Canadians, particularly to West End residents.
A brief private ceremony tomorrow will mark the closure of the base at Daniel's Head.
Station personnel will gather on the lawn in front of the beach area and hear parting words from the commanding officer, Major Sam Gillespie, the base said in a news release.
Guest speakers will include Minister of Delegated Affairs the Hon. Sir John Sharpe, Commander of Communication Command of the Canadian Forces Brigadier-General Robert Martineau, and a representative of the Canadian Commissioner.
In the coming months, the 87 military personnel who live on the base with their families will take up new postings elsewhere. A small detachment will remain until December 31 to complete the closure.
The Canadians established the west end base in 1963, as a high-frequency radio unit.
