Banker denies stealing $2.8 million

stealing 1,875,000 ($2,812,500 Bermuda dollars) from his employer when he appeared in Supreme Court yesterday.

He also denied obtaining those sums of money under false pretences and with intent to defraud, inducing Mary Faries to deliver the money to New Way Property Ltd. without proper authorisation on August 29, 1996.

Diggins, 49, of West Side Road, Somerset, will appear again on September 9 for mention.

He was the senior manager of the Bank of Butterfield's international credit and foreign loans section. He was represented by lawyer Marc Telemaque who was holding for Julian Hall.

Also appearing before Puisne Judge Norma Wade during the monthly arraignments in the Supreme Court was Gregory Howard Dill, 34, of Angle Street, Pembroke.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge that he murdered David Bruce Riley on May 24 this year.

His lawyer Archie Warner did not apply for bail and Dill will have a trial date set at the next arraignment session on October 1.

A 33-year-old man yesterday pleaded not guilty to one charge of serious sexual assault, one charge of sexual assault, depriving a woman of her liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm and intruding on the privacy of a woman. These offences were allegedly committed on March 16, 1996.

He will next appear on October 1 when a trial date is expected to be set. The man was represented by lawyer Myron Simmons.

Another man denied one charge of sexually exploiting a young boy when he was placed in a position of trust. Lawyer Michael Scott appeared for the man who was bailed to appear on October 1 for mention.

Toyhan Aarron Dill, 20 of Sandycroft Heights, Southampton, and Shane Edmond Todd 20 of no fixed abode, yesterday denied receiving property -- a wallet, credit cards, personal papers and $45 belonging to Somers Tuzo -- which had been unlawfully obtained on February 20, 1996.

Dill also denied one charge of attempting to steal money from the Bank of Butterfield on February 20, 1996.

Todd was represented by lawyer Mr. Warner while Mr. Telemaque appeared for Dill. Both men were bailed to appear on October 1 when a date will be set for trial.
