cellular aerial has won a battle in its war with a telecommunications' company.

For Bermuda Digital Communications has agreed to put construction work on the tower on hold indefinitely -- after being approached by the company that owns the Warwick-based construction site.

On Monday The Royal Gazette revealed that the action group Community Against Radiation Emmissions planned a fresh offensive by appealing to landowners Canadian Pacific to have the tower blocked.

Yesterday the company, which also owns the Southampton Princess hotel, received a petition signed by 60 hotel workers who live near the construction site. An additional 500 signatures collected by CARE was also presented to hotel management.

Last night Southampton Princess general manager Norman Mastalir confirmed that Canadian Pacific was now examining its lease agreement with BDC to see if it could pull out of the contract.

Mr. Mastalir said that the company had a legal agreement with BDC, it also had a moral obligation to it's staff. Canadian Pacific prides itself on its environmentally friendly track record.

Mr. Mastalir also confirmed that, following talks between the two companies, it had been agreed that all building work at the Faraway site, would stop.

"At the moment we are trying to determine what the best course of action is to take,'' Mr. Mastalir said.

"We have a legal obligation to BDC by way of a lease to let them build the tower on the site.

"But we also have a moral obligation concerning the health of our staff and our neighbours. We have our legal people and environmental affairs' people looking into it now to see what alternatives are open to us.

"But we have met with BDC representatives and have reached an agreement with them that construction stops until such time as we can come to a decision.''
