Winds up to 40 knots were expected with higher gales on waters as sailors were advised to stay in port.

The highest winds were expected today, decreasing overnight and dropping to 15 to 20 knots tomorrow.

The gales were caused by deep low pressure north of the Island added to a trailing cold front.
