Bike thief caught on camera
months in West Gate Correctional Facility yesterday.
Styles Randall Furbert, 21, of 15 Middle Park Lane, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to stealing a scooter cycle on May 8, and possession of drug equipment on May 9.
Crown counsel Oonagh Goodred told the court that about 12.50 p.m., the owner of the cycle witnessed Furbert stealing it from the cycle park at the City Hall parking lot.
Acting Senior Magistrate, Edward King also heard that Police were able to make a positive identification of Furbert stealing the bike by examining closed circuit video cameras located across from the park.
Police consequently executed a search on Burgess' home on May 9 and also questioned the suspect.
Ms Goodred told the court that Police found traces of plant material in his room, as well as several yellow pay type envelopes and sealed plastic bags.
When Burgess was asked by Police what was in them, he replied: "I smoke weed, weed was in there.'' The plant material was later analysed by a Government analyst and tested positive for cannabis.
When Burgess was further questioned about the stolen cycle, he proceeded to take Police to a wooded area at Eve's Hill in Pembroke.
There they uncovered from the bushes, a stripped scooter that matched the same licence of the stolen cycle.
Burgess was then arrested and taken to Hamilton Police station, where he confessed to the crime.
"I stole the bike -- I'm sorry it was a frivolous act on my part,'' he said.
In court, Burgess expressed remorse, saying: "I needed to fix my bike,'' he said.
"I had no job at the time, so I couldn't afford the parts. It was stupid, because two weeks later, I found a job.'' Mr. King replied: "And now you've lost it. A theft has been committed. Cycle thefts cost this community a colossal sum of money each year.'' Mr. King sentenced Burgess to three months imprisonment for possession of drug equipment and six months imprisonment for stealing the cycle.
Both sentences are to run concurrently.
