Blow for residents of Smith's Island

A story in Wednesday's newspaper incorrectly identified the Burgess Point jetty as the Burcher Point jetty.

Residents of Smith's Island have been dealt a disappointment.

The Development Applications Board rejected plans for a new floating jetty to be built at Burcher Point, St. David's Road, in St. George's.

An objection raised stemmed from the fact that the applicant, Juergen Dale, not the current landowner -- the Works and Engineering Department -- did not sign the standard development application form. Also the application was not submitted with the landowner's authorisation.

Works and Engineering objected to the proposed dock because a new application had not been submitted to them.

Head Surveyor David Andrew said: "The previous application was withdrawn. As of today there is no current proposal as far as I know.'' The proposed dock was to have been located at the East End Wharf between the Black Horse Tavern and the St. David's Post Office.

Its proposed measurements reportedly exceeded the maximum size of 200 square feet and maximum length of 24 feet.

Planning objected to the fact that the proposed dock did not meet the sizing regulations.

Acting Planning director Peter Adwick said: "The dock did not comply with our normal requirements. Also they did not have the consent of the landowners which is Works and Engineering.'' It was to be located some 50 feet offshore and would have been able to accommodate as many as five boats.

The proposed jetty was requested by seven households on Smith's Island.
