Brothers charged with hospital attack

A picture caption yesterday of the two suspects in the Hospital attack being led to court, incorrectly identified a third man as a Police detective. The man was lawyer Sen. Larry Scott.

Two Hamilton Parish brothers were charged in Magistrates' Court yesterday with the chemical spray attack on the hospital's emergency department last Thursday night.

Duval and Goodwin Spencer were charged together with using threatening behaviour in a public place, namely King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

They were each charged with unlawful assault of Dr. Philip Jones at King Edward.

Duval, 32, was charged alone with unlawful wounding earlier last Thursday of Rudell Smith in Hamilton Parish with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

And Goodwin, 25, was charged with delivering "a noxious CS gas'' at King Edward with intent to disable a Police officer and Smith -- a patient suffering a fractured skull.

He was further charged with spraying the teargas-like substance at Dr.

Constance Richards with intent to disable someone else.

The Spencer brothers, facing Supreme Court trial, were not required to plead to the charges.

Represented by lawyer Mr. Richard Hector, they were each bailed in the sum of $1,000 plus like sureties.

Crown Counsel Mr. Stephen Harrison objected to bail.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis ordered the two men to have "no contact whatsoever'' with Smith, who was still in hospital, and to stay away from his house.

A December 15 mention date was set for the brothers.
