Cablevision staff win right to hold union ballot

Bermuda Cablevision workers will hold a ballot next month to determine if they will be represented by the Bermuda Industrial Union.

Their quest to be represented reached a climax yesterday when eight Bermudian staff picketed the company's Laffan Street headquarters.

One of the strikers told the Royal Gazette that staff felt conditions were unfair at the company and, after much agonising, decided they wanted to hold a ballot for union recognition.

Their request was denied, prompting them to walk out.

Cablevision chiefs met with BIU officials and BIU president Derrick Burgess revealed yesterday afternoon that: "We have got a letter from Cablevision agreeing to have a ballot on September 10.'' The Cablevision employees will return to work tomorrow and Mr. Burgess said they were glad they reached a quick agreement.
