The legislation relaxes size restrictions on cars so that wheelchairs can be placed in them.

The Motor Car Amendment (No.3) Act 1995 also clears the way for friends or relations to drive a physically handicapped person around in his car.

In addition, Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess said the bill exempted those with disabilities from licensing and registration fees.

It was a demonstration of compassion for the needy in society.

Shadow Transport Minister Mr. Dennis Lister said the Progressive Labour Party was in full agreement with easing the burden on the disabled.

He asked Mr. Burgess whether he was aware of any vehicles large enough for wheelchairs.

Mr. Lister touched on another aspect of the bill -- that which enabled motorbike dealers to examine new motor cycles for licensing.

It was important, he stressed, to ensure dealers stuck to the required standards.

MPs yesterday also passed an amendment to the Auxiliary Bicycles Act.

This legislation gives dealers the authority to examine new auxiliary bikes for licensing.

It is designed to speed up the licensing of new bikes.
