Open days at St. George's and Somerset police stations and a Police exhibition will give the public an opportunity to see some of what goes on behind the scenes.

"It is to make the public more aware of what the Police do,'' said community media relations officer, P.c. Gary Venning. "There will be lots of interesting displays ideal for children.'' The week starting October 16, officially opens with a service at the Anglican Cathedral for Police families and members of the public of all denominations.

Police station open houses will include illegal drug, weapon and photographic displays as well as resuscitation technique demonstrations by police officers.

Children will receive photographs of Police vehicles and other giveaways.

Refreshments will also be provided.

St. George's Police station opens to the public from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday October 17. The Somerset Police station will be open at the same time on Tuesday October 18.

P.c. Venning advised schools bringing large groups of children to call the Police stations in advance.

A three-day exhibition at the Harbour Room Hamilton docks will give the public the opportunity to test their eyes and driving reflexes on special machines.

Highly publicised crime scene sketches and stories, an Outward Bound exhibit, historic photographs and a radar display dating back to the 1950s will also be on display.

The exhibits will be available for viewing between Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Youth awards will be presented at the Police Recreation Club Hall by the Police Commissioner and Youth, Sport and Recreation Minister, Ms Pamela Gordon at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday October 18.

And a Royal Gazette supplement on Tuesday October 18 entitled, "Police in the Community'' will include articles on marine safety, crime prevention, D.N.A.

and a "Bobby Quiz''.

"Thank-a-Cop Day'' on Friday October 21 will be presented by Mr. David Lopes on ZBM.
