Chamber supports Coxall
which heralds a major shake-up of the Service.
The new Police Commissioner, Mr. Colin Coxall, launched the new Service Strategy earlier this week aiming to slim down the hierarchy and strengthen its ability to fight crime.
Uppermost in Mr. Coxall's plan was an emphasis on community Policing and a drugs crackdown to help protect Bermuda's tourist and business economies.
Chamber first vice president, Mr. David Rowntree, said: "The Chamber supports the proposal for reorganisation, technological advancement and particularly the Commissioner's recommendation for a greater emphasis on the training and development of personnel.'' He said: "The rise in crime and violence threatens the environment of both residents and businesses alike and the prevalence of illegal drug usage is destroying the lives of many young citizens.
"These developments concern everyone in our society and underline the need for a modern and up-to-date Police Service.'' Mr. Rowntree added that in any large organisation plans had to be laid to ensure it was well equipped to cope with the demands of the future.
