School for Girls during a ceremony to call two young Bermudians to the Bar last week.

The Chief Justice was echoing the words of Miss Julie Elizabeth McLean, one of the successful new lawyers in Supreme Court.

Miss McLean praised her teachers at the school for telling girls that if they give their best "they can be whatever they want to be. Today is living proof of their efforts.'' The Chief Justice pointed out that his daughters had attended the school and had done well. He added: "If people have the right scholastic background the odds are in their favour for future development.'' Miss McLean and Mr. Charles Christian Rolf Luthi were both proposed by Mr.

Alexander Cooper of Conyers, Dill and Pearman.

Mr. Luthi, of Warwick, is a former Saltus Grammar student. He moved to Groton School in the United States in 1979, before moving to Trinity College in Oxford in 1984.

During his four years at Oxford, he spent some time at schools in Austria and Germany, taking courses in the political and economic aspects of the European Economic Community.

He gained a degree in philosophy, before studying jurisprudence at Oriel College in Oxford.

Mr. Luthi has work experience at Conyers, Dill and Pearman, and gained the company's legal scholarship between 1988-91. He also worked at the Bank of Bermuda and for a house painting business.

He is a keen sportsman having been captain of the Oxford University Yacht Club, and has sailed in Bermuda Fitted Dinghy races and the Newport to Bermuda race. He rowed for Oriel College and Groton School and plays squash.

His uncle, Mr. Cooper said: "He is a singer of some note. As he plans a career in litigation his well-developed voice should be of considerable assistance to his career.'' Miss McLean, of Devonshire, left Bermuda High School to go to Japan as the Rotary International Exchange Student in 1985.

She gained a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Western Ontario and Bachelor of Laws at the University of British Columbia.

Recently she has completed a professional development course on organising and managing a public company in British Columbia. She has also been a public relations volunteer at the Aquarium.

She will also be well suited to litigation having been a member of the University of Western Ontario's debating society.

Her interests include marine preservation, scuba diving, tennis, hiking and travel.

Both Mr. Luthi and Miss McLean were welcomed by the Chief Justice who said he was delighted that they would be involved in litigation so he would see a lot of them.
