Child saved from drowning

Police spokesperson P.c. Gary Venning said Police were called to Clearwater Beach shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday after a report was lodged about a young girl in distress.

Upon arriving at the beach, the four-year-old girl was being resuscitated by several lifeguards.

P.c. Venning said the girl, who was at the beach swimming with a group of children, fell into the water from a raft and got into difficulty.

The girl was rescued by other swimmers and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was promptly administered by the lifeguards.

She was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and detained for observations.

P.c. Venning said she was making a good recovery.

The officers, called to the scene, praised the child's rescuers for their prompt action which "undoubtably'' save the girl's life.

But they also noted a number of young children present, who appeared to be unsupervised, and requested parents be vigilant with regard to their children's safety when at the beach.

A 14-year-old East End Boy was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after being stabbed Friday evening.

Police spokesperson P.c. Gary Venning said the St. George's teen was injured around 5 p.m. at a Ferry Reach home.

The incident occurred after the teen became involved in a fight with a man.

P.c. Venning said the pair scuffled outside, in the garden, when the man produced a knife and slashed the teen across the arm.

The teen was taken to hospital for treatment of what was considered a non-life threatening injury.

P.c. Venning said an 18-year-old Warwick man was arrested in connection with the stabbing.

Traffic accidents Police were kept busy over the weekend with a number of traffic accidents and thefts.

Police spokesperson P.c. Gary Venning said two German visitors left their belongings unattended on Warwick Long Bay around 4.30 p.m. Saturday.

Upon their return, a short time later, they discovered someone had taken their knapsack containing a small amount of cash, a Canon camera, credit cards and clothing.

A second visiting couple were targeted by a thief while visiting the same beach.

P.c. Venning said the couple had parked their cycle in the Warwick Long Bay parking lot, around 6 p.m.

The pair left their bag in the cycle basket while they went to take a picture of the beach.

On returning, a few minutes later, the bag containing snorkelling gear and a small amount of cash had been stolen.

Police are also investigating an accident where a 22-year-old Hamilton Parish man suffered multiple fractures to his leg and a broken hip.

P.c. Venning said the accident happened around 6.30 p.m. Saturday on North Shore Road outside the Enterprise Grocery Store.

A Mitsubishi Colt emerged from the parking lot and collided with a Yamaha motorcycle which was travelling west on North Shore.

The rider and passenger were thrown a considerable distance as a result of the impact.

The 17-year-old rider sustained cuts and abrasions, but the 22-year-old passenger suffered multiple fractures and a broken hip.

P.c. Venning said there was extensive damage to both vehicles.

A 62-year-old visitor was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon following an accident on his livery cycle.

The mishap took place on South Road in Smiths around 3 p.m. when the rider lost control of the east bound cycle on a sharp right hand bend at the junction of Somersall Road.

P.c. Venning said the rider collided with a wooden fence, throwing two occupants to the ground.

The man sustained a broken wrist, dislocated shoulder and cuts and abrasions to his legs.

His 55-year-old wife, who was riding as a pillion passenger, suffered cuts and abrasions to her arms and legs.

And a 58-year-old St. George's man became the victim of a cycle accident over the weekend when he lost control of his cycle on the Causeway.

P.c. Venning said the accident happened around 10.30 p.m. Friday, after the rider lost control as he negotiated a roundabout.

The man fell into the road where he suffered a dislocated shoulder and fracture ribs.
