City crackdown on sandwich boards
signs cluttering the City's walkways.
The Royal Gazette called Corporation of Hamilton secretary Roger Sherratt to find out if the recent proliferation of Front Street sandwich boards was in breach of local laws.
But Mr. Sherratt stated: "It isn't that the sandwich boards themselves are illegal -- it's what you have on them.'' He said only the name and nature of the business were alowed to be displayed on the boards.
"Any sign with `sale' on it or displaying merchandise is definitely, strictly against the law,'' he said.
Mr. Sherratt said he spoke with the managers of a number of Front Street businesses on Friday afternoon about illegal boards -- including an art shop and a T-shirt shop.
Mr. Sherratt said, if prosecuted, the businesses could be fined for every day they continued to have the illegal signs posted -- with a maximum fine around $2,500.
