Club should stay open -- Robinson
doors after it was raided by Police.
Although Mr. Robinson failed to illustrate which sports club he was referring to, only the Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) has recently closed its doors after a Police raid resulted in two arrests last Friday.
Mr. Robinson, speaking during debate in the House of Assembly on purchasing land on St. Monica's Road, said: "We have a sports club that's taken the wrong approach in shutting up rather than involving itself.
"The only way you really influence people is to have some close association with them,'' he added.
Although the Opposition was not contesting the purchase of land for open space in the St. Monica's area, several Government MPs took the opportunity to field their own theories on how to fight the drug war.
Criticising past methods of fighting the drug war, Mr. Robinson said: "There comes a time to take a different approach. The drug problem is complex.
"This motion (to buy land for open spaces) begins to recognise harm reduction to community and people -- where we can reduce harm as a result of the drug menace among us.'' He said the Island's sports clubs used to be community bastions that led the way for pro-active change and called the recent move "sad''.
The Opposition remained mostly quiet during Government's speeches on how to fight the drug war.
They were opposed to the official address of the space to be purchased and asked it to be changed from 10 Mission Road to 10 St. Monica's Road.
After Government MPs finished speaking, Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott compromised and said the address would be changed to Lot 10 on St.
Monica's Road.
