College elections

Nominations are in at the Bermuda College for the second election of officers of the student government.

The election for the executive takes place on Friday at the Student Hall between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Nominees will present their platforms at noon tomorrow.

President Kenneth Caesar has decided to run again and this time he will be challenged by Belcario Thomas.

Mr. Caesar said his presidency had been challenging, but rewarding.

"Since this was the first elected student government a lot of what we had to do was about getting respect,'' Mr. Caesar said.

"We had to develop effective communication to the administration, but let the students know we were responsible to them,'' he added.

Mr. Caesar said elected officers for student governments were good for student bodies because of the eagerness of the leaders.

"If you are going to take time to campaign,'' he said, "then you are going to be more committed to the task at hand.'' "One of the things we've done is developing the mechanism for all students to voice their concerns,'' he added.

"The administration seems to be changing in that they are listening to the students,'' Mr. Caesar noted. "They have become more student orientated -- in some aspects.'' The 20-year-old would like to pursue a degree in educational psychology and he said his presidency was an opportunity to get leadership and public speaking skills while getting to know the student body.

"In the past people joined the student council often just for extra-curricular credit,'' Mr. Caesar said. "This way they get better representation.

"Some of the students still do not see it as an important thing. But its not their fault, we as a government should work hard to get our ideas across.'' Mr. Caesar said the student government elections will take place on the last day of classes and he hoped a large number of students will turn out.

He admitted having an election on the last day of class was odd, but said it gave the executive four months of ground work to prepare.

"Next year we hope that it will be in March or at least early April,'' he added.

The College's coordinator of the student union, Leonard Santucci, confirmed that nominations had also been submitted by April Fisher and Deanna Deshield for vice-president and Stefan Dupres is running uncontested for treasurer.

Keith Caesar and Davida Morris are contesting the student government secretary's post.
