College student admits bringing in $57,000 worth of cannabis
A 22-year-old Hamilton Parish man was yesterday remanded in custody by Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis after admitting importing more than two pounds of cannabis and intending to sell it.
William Hartman, of Claytown, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to bringing 1,154 grams of the drug through the Airport on January 3.
Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, told the court Hartman left Bermuda on December 23 last year for Jamaica.
While there, he met a Jamaican man and stayed at his home. Because he ran out of money after a week, the Jamaican man offered to sell him the cannabis for $150.
Hartman bought the drugs, intending to sell them when he returned to Bermuda.
Sgt. Osborne said the drugs had a street value of $57,000 dollars.
When Hartman returned to Bermuda, Customs officers found the drugs sealed in the soles of three pairs of shoes. He told the officers he knew he had the drugs, but did not know how they were packaged.
Hartman told Police he was a college student and he needed the money to "ease his parents up''.
Mr. Francis remanded Hartman in custody until trial on July 14, pending a social inquiry report, and called the matter a "flagrant case of importation''.
