Development and Opportunity Minister Jerome Dill said that beginning in January, up to 60 young people will see all aspects of the construction industry before specialising in a particular field by next fall.

Calling the apprenticeship programme an "unprecedented opportunity'', Mr.

Dill said the National Training Board understood that sometimes it was difficult for young people to gain skills while earning money.

"This is a particularly proud day for this ministry and the Ministry of Education,'' Mr. Dill said. "So many young people seem to be looking for a greater opportunity. It recognises the worth of those skilled with their hands.'' The successful applicants will be enrolled in an orientation, then enter an intensive full time programme for one semester.

The students will spend up to two days per week with construction industry employers.

For three days per week students will be at the college getting hands on training in masonry, plumbing, and carpentry.

If successfully completed, the students can seek apprenticeship opportunities in the industry next summer.

Once apprenticed, they can return to the college in September part time to study for a City and Guilds qualification in their chosen field.

The NTB will meet the cost of tuition for the apprentices and they are expected to complete a four year programme.

Mr. Dill added: "This will not only be a huge boost for young people who may be looking for a career, but also those who have not been able to find employment or are looking for a career change.'' Mr. Dill also said that although the NTB was prepared to underwrite the initiative, it had received offers for co-funding from within the construction industry.
