Construction work on the new National Sports Centre is moving ahead at a fast pace.

Currently, preparation work on the sports fields is taking place, laying the groundwork for the running tracks, cricket pitches and ancillary services at the Frog Lane development.

And deputy chairman of trustees Charles Marshall said the board hoped to meet the original opening date of 2001, although he admitted they were a little behind schedule because of the weather.

At present an extensive network of irrigation pipes are being laid around the northern fields, which will ensure a hi-tech recycled water system keeps the surfaces in good condition.

In addition, electricity cables are being put in to power floodlights and underground lights -- which will eventually provide the opportunity for night-time cricket. Four cricket wickets are also being laid and much of the remaining pitches are being seeded to give the centre a healthy start.

And next month the controversial running track will be closed while it is replaced.

Mr. Marshall said the old track, which suffered drainage problems, would be taken up as preparations are made to lay the new surface.

It is hoped the quality of the centre will attract international sports teams.

There is the possibility of staging a World Cup cricket match and hosting US college basketball teams.

Once the outside work is completed then the attention will turn to the main part of the centre. "At present it is the majority of the outside work, but most of the building will be the triple gym, pool and entrance,'' he said.

"The final drawings of the rest of the complex are being finalised and we hope to have them before the planning board sometime early next year.''
