Court hears of `horror' sex attack on two expat women

Calvin Eugene Trott is a "serious danger to the public'' and deserves the maximum of 30 years for a devastating rape and sexual assault on two women last September, a prosecutor argued yesterday.

Senior Crown counsel Peter Eccles yesterday painted a horrifying picture of a two-and-a-half hour ordeal two non-Bermudian women working on the Island endured on September 25 after Trott broke and entered one woman's apartment and robbed her of $5.

The women sobbed when the summary of evidence was read and at the end of Mr.

Eccles submissions, Trott was seen wiping his face before standing and walking from the courtroom.

The horrific ordeal had a "significant and profound'' effect on their lives, including sleeping with the lights on, being afraid of crowds and strange men, and keeping their windows closed, said Mr. Eccles.

Of one woman, Mr. Eccles said: "This is a young woman who was active who can't even go out for a walk now.'' Both women -- who Mr. Eccles said he expected to leave the Island -- had discontinued counselling, at least one because it had become too expensive because her insurance did not cover it.

"These victims did what was the only reasonable and safe thing they could do,'' he said. "They acquiesced in a grotesque violation of their personal integrity and the sanctity of their bodies.

"And suffered the disruption and destruction of much that society holds sacred,'' Mr. Eccles continued. "That was the only thing they could do. The only saving grace in the entire set of circumstances is that no one died.'' Trott, of Mount Hope Lane, Smith's Parish, pleaded guilty to two counts of serious sexual assault while armed with a knife and charges robbing one of the women of $500 and robbing the other of $150.

He pleaded not guilty to a charge of breaking and entering one woman's home on September 25, and two counts of depriving the women of their liberty.

Mr. Eccles offered no evidence on the charges and asked the court to enter not guilty verdicts.

Early yesterday, Trott's lawyer, Elizabeth Christopher asked Mrs. Justice Wade-Miller to remove her from the case for want of "proper instructions'' and "personal reasons''.

But after meetings with Trott and a chamber meeting with the judge and prosecutor, she relented.

Court hears of `horror' sex attack on women "Every possible aggravating circumstance is present in this case,'' said Mr.

Eccles.

The presence of the weapon, the violence used, the planned nature of the assaults and the length of time, in addition to Trott's previous convictions, and the effect on the victims are all factors which point to a lengthy sentence, Mr. Eccles said.

Mr. Eccles added that the maximum penalty for serious sexual assault is 30 years.

Mrs. Justice Wade-Miller heard one woman had given up waiting for the other in her Smith's home and had gone to bed when she saw a man coming into a side room window.

The terrified woman froze, pretending to be asleep and when he put an object to her neck would reach out to touch it to find it was a knife.

Trott asked for money, telling her "hey, hey, this is serious'' and later demanding money, waving the knife about, saying: "Get me money. Get me some f***ing money.'' Saying he wanted sex, Trott made the woman lay on her bed and performed oral sex on her, then told her to put his penis inside her, but she was unable to.

At that time the other woman drove into the driveway only to be met by Trott who casually walked out of the woman's apartment, saying "goodbye'' to her in the entrance.

The first woman was so terrified that when she tried to tell her friend what had happened, she could not speak above a whisper.

Moments later, the friend screamed that the man was back in the apartment.

He was able to get $5 from the first woman, fondled her, and then ordered them both into the car.

The friend drove while Trott -- with the apartment occupant in the back seat -- gave directions to the Harrington Hundreds Grocery.

During the ride, Trott fondled the woman all the while threatening: "I could mess you two up.'' Through threats and force -- a man's arm is seen pulling one woman offscreen on the ATM machine videotape -- Trott was able to get $650 from the women.

He told the women he was a drug addict and he was "going to have some fun'' and slapped one of them when she looked him directly in the eyes.

Mr. Eccles said Trott brought crack cocaine at St. Monica's Road, Pembroke and promised to release the women, but added: "He lied.'' He brought beer and cigarettes at the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club, taking one woman into the club and threatening to kill her if the other was not in the car when they returned.

He got the apartment occupant's phone number by making threats and forced her to hold the other woman's face in her hands and stare at her, promising that she would not contact Police.

She was dropped back at home, while later Trott made her friend drive to Spittal Pond parking lot.

There he forced the woman to perform oral sex on him then had intercourse with the woman, who according to Police was "unresponsive''.

During the serious sexual assault, Trott ordered the woman to kiss him, which Mr. Eccles said she did believing he still had a knife. He also forced her to perform oral sex.

All during this ordeal, Trott tormented her, Mr. Eccles said, at one point asking if she had ever had sex with a black man. He eventually gave her two quarters to call the other woman.

She found a payphone near the Collector's Hill Apothecary to be defective, only hearing her friend's voice but unable to respond.

The woman was able to make her escape after asking for a drink and was taken to Tiffany's store on Court Street.

After his return from the store, Trott went into an alleyway to urinate and the woman ran into the store, telling the staff what had happened. Once the woman was taken to Hamilton Police Station, Police contacted the apartment owner by phone. Both women were described as "hysterical''.

Trott has a previous conviction for robbery of a female taxi driver. He was released on parole from prison on May 5th last year on a four year sentence for causing grievous bodily harm to an 86-year-old woman.

Ms Christopher will offer mitigation on Trott's behalf tomorrow morning.
