Cricket mourns death of long-time official

Wilton Smith, who served Cleveland County, Eastern Counties and Bermuda Cricket Board of Control for many years died suddenly last Friday.

Smith was first appointed as secretary of Cleveland County in 1962 and served in that post until 1990 when he was elected as president of the club, a position he held for two years.

Smith's long stint with the BCBC began in 1972 as secretary, a post he held until 1984. He was recalled as secretary in 1991 due to the death of then secretary Clayton Butterfield and held that post until 1997 under president Ed Bailey. In 1972 Smith was also appointed as secretary of the Eastern Counties and held that position until 1998.

His cricketing career began in 1959 with Cleveland County. He finished playing in 1965 and concentrated after that on administrative work with his club and the Eastern Counties and BCBC.

From 1972 to 1997, Smith represented Bermuda as assistant manager to youth teams, including the sides that travelled to Canada in 1991, Denmark in 1993 and Holland in 1995. In 1985 and '95 Smith was assistant co-ordinator for the International Youth Tournaments which Bermuda hosted.

His funeral is planned for later this week.
