The owners of the Hamilton Parish tourist staple Crystal Caves, the Wilkinson Trust, can go ahead and build an addition to its existing building to accommodate an office and storage room.

Work can proceed on the condition that two nearby Bermuda Cedar trees are protected from damage.

The 306-square-foot addition has been approved by Government conservationist David Wingate who agreed with projections that the addition would not affect the cave.

Crystal Caves sits on 24 acres and is zoned under several regulatory areas including woodland reserve, green space, open space and it is a natural reserve. The application comes near the end of the tourism off season and may cause some disruption as the clockwise flow of visitors may have to be redirected. An overhanging cliff will be filled in and blocked off to shore up an area near the recently approved Bermuda Aquarium's new administration building.

Publisher of the Bermuda Sun newspaper Randy French has received approval to construct a tidal pond on farmland just east of Frank's Bay, Southampton.

High tide and heavy rains usually flood a one acre area adjacent to Middle Road which breeds swarms of mosquitoes.

The DAB will allow the pond provided mosquito eating Gambusta fish are stocked in the pond to counter what was described as a "chronic'' problem.
