Yesterday's ad carried in bold type the message: "Good Fisheries Management Vote PLP''.

And it told of a split between the fishermen and Government, drawing attention to the fish pot ban.

But yesterday Deputy Premier the Hon. Ann Cartwright, who as Environment Minister launched the ban amid concern over dwindling fish stocks, lashed back.

She said good fisheries management came from the United Bermuda Party.

"Mr. Danny Farias, running for the PLP, even though a fisherman, does not understand what makes fisheries in Bermuda viable,'' she said.

Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto said she inferred the Progressive Labour Party would revoke the fish pot ban.

"What else does this ad mean?'' She added: "Nowhere in this ad is the emphasis placed on illegal pots, and we all know what illegal pots have done and are doing.

"I am very puzzled why we should have this full-page ad. As far as I am concerned we have got good fisheries management.

"If the PLP wants to take away the fish pot ban, tell me why. I am going to stand solid -- no fish pots.'' Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto also questioned statistics on the effect of the fish pot ban.

The ad claimed the Department of Fisheries was the source.

But Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto said: "I've checked and this is not the case.'' Mr. Farias, the Opposition's Devonshire South candidate, said the ad had been taken out by himself -- not the PLP.

And it was a reprint of an ad he placed in The Royal Gazette in May, 1992.

"Why didn't Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto make any comment when it was originally printed? Why does she choose now to say something?'' Mr. Farias said it would be entirely wrong to infer the PLP would revoke the ban, which he has long criticised.

"I don't have any comment on the PLP policy on fishing,'' he added.

Mr. Farias, who backed the ad's statistics, said the fishing industry had been destroyed under the UBP.

He said many fishermen's lives had been wrecked.
