Richard Ricardo Steede, 37, of Kitty's Drive, sat quietly as six Police witnesses told of the search of his home on August 17 last year.

They were joined by two expert witnesses who testified to the nature and value of the drugs -- worth almost $3,000 -- found shortly after 1 p.m.

And two of Steede's neighbours said they were not at home or did not flush their toilets during the time in question. A third's statement was read into the record.

Steede denies possession of crack cocaine intended for supply, possession of cannabis, drug equipment, and obstruction.

Steede admits using offensive words during the search in which officers sawed open a sewage pipe leading to a cesspit after hearing a toilet filling.

Peter Eccles represents the Crown, while Richard Hector represents Steede.

Chief Justice Austin Ward presides. P.c. Brian Mello told the seven woman, five man jury he entered the house and went to a bathroom to see and hear the toilet filling and Steede standing in the shower fully clothed.

He added Steede was taken outside and watched as a female officer tried to retrieve the drugs through a drain access.

Steede was injured in a struggle as he kicked at the officer, Jurine Smith, just as she pulled out a watertight plastic bag.

Government analyst Kevin Leask said the package contained 8.4 grammes of 75 percent pure cocaine. Sgt. Ian Coyles said his drug-sniffing Labrador, Jeff, searched the house and noted brown paper wraps on a kitchen counter.

He added Jeff broke off his search to stop and sit in front of Steede, indicating the smell of either cocaine, cannabis, or heroin on the accused's hands.

Mr. Hector is expected to open the case in defence of Steede this morning.
