Plans for a womens' rehabilitation centre in Smith's could be held back for months.

The Fair Havens Christian Care Association wants to establish a 16-bed unit on Verdmont Road, but appeals lodged by neighbours after planning permission was granted could block the move for the immediate future.

The unit, which is to be converted from tourist accommodation, would be used for women recovering from alcohol or drug dependencies and would serve as a halfway house for those who are set to return home.

Their current base at Victoria Street only has enough space for ten people.

At present both sides are preparing their arguments for the appeal, and once all the information is submitted the case will go before Environment Minister Harry Soares for consideration.

The Minister may deal with the appeal himself or could refer to one of the overseas planning inspectors, who visit several times a year.

They could then decide to hold a public hearing into the matter, before making their recommendations to the Minister.

It is understood that there are at least six neighbours who objected to the plan.

Fair Havens moved to reassure residents that there was nothing to fear from the development.

RULING DELAYED ON NURSERY SCHOOLS PLN Ruling delayed on nursery schools The Development Applications Board has received requests to build two nursery schools for up to 120 infants.

The schools, each catering for 60 students, could be built on Richmond Road, Pembroke and Middle Road, Devonshire.

The Board deferred making a decision on both applications until it has received further information from both parties.

DAB RECEIVES PLAN FOR CHURCH PLN DAB receives plan for church The Evangelical Church has applied to build a new church across the street from its current building on Paget's Mission Road.

The application for approval in principle has been made to the Development Applications Board.

Church spokesman Don Corriea said the church would like to consolidate its holdings on one property at Mission Drive.

The application seeks permission to build a new 400 seat sanctuary next to its current project, a church hall, which it expects to complete in November.

The church hall includes a recreational hall and classrooms for Sunday school.

"This application was made so that our whole facility is on one side of the street,'' Mr. Corriea said.

He added the membership had outgrown the 100-year-old building it currently used.

"On Sunday mornings it's packed,'' he said. "A new sanctuary gives us room for expansion.'' At present the church's directors have not made a decision on plans for the old church on Mission Road.

APPROVAL SOUGHT TO SUBDIVIDE PLOT PLN Approval sought to subdivide plot Planning approval is being sought to subdivide a plot of land in Smith's Parish.

Corrado Trust recently applied for planning approval to subdivide property on 13 Wilderness Land.

According to planning records, the 16 lots will range between 0.12 to 0.33 acres in size. A new estate road is also in the works for the East End property.

A June 11 application, signed by Patricia O. Corrado, listed the land as currently being used for storage/light industry.

David Kuhn of Jones Waddington Ltd., the agents for Corrado Trust, said the proposed lots will be for light industrial use.

Corrado Trust had previously applied for permission to turn the land into residential lots, but has been turned down.
