Docks row sent to tribunal
demands in an ongoing dispute with management.
And the matter has now been called before an industrial tribunal under the Trades Disputes Act in a bid to bring the two sides together.
Dockworkers began taking wildcat action last month following a dispute with management company Stevedoring Services.
While union bosses wanted all workers to be included in a new collective agreement, management insisted that the company's four clerical staff should sign an alternative agreement. The current contract expires at the end of this month.
A temporary solution was reached when dockers agreed to go back to work on the proviso that fresh talks would begin as soon as Bermuda Industrial Union first vice president Chris Furbert returned to the Island from an overseas visit.
Although Mr. Furbert is now back in Bermuda, Home Affairs Minister Paula Cox has called in a third party to act as mediator in the dispute. No timetable for the talks has been set.
Last night both Stevedoring Services president Michael Lohan and Mr. Furbert confirmed that the matter will now go to arbitration.
