And the accident occurred just one hour after Police issued the driver a ticket for a traffic offence.

A Police spokesman said Police first stopped the 19-year-old as he left the city of Hamilton around 2 a.m. yesterday morning.

Shortly before 3 a.m. officers near Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton attempted to stop the car for a second driving offence.

However, the driver sped away at high speed.

Another officer was nearly struck as she tried to stop the still speeding car near the junction of Bay Lane and Somerset Road.

The driver then lost control of his vehicle, collided with a utility pole, and caused a small fire and brief power outage.

A Bermuda Electric Light Company spokeswoman yesterday said the pole was snapped in half by the force of the impact.

The driver reportedly suffered minor facial injuries as a result of the collision.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.
