traffic lights are upgraded in Hamilton.

All the lights, on Victoria Street, will be refitted with hi-tech electronics so they are synchronised with each other, improving traffic flow.

At least one set will be out of action each day. Warnings signs have already been posted on approaches to the junctions at Cedar Avenue, Parliament Street and Court Street.

Corporation of Hamilton secretary Roger Sherratt said the work would be finished by the end of the week.

He added: "If you are travelling north/south, you have to stop.

"If you are travelling east/west, you have the right of way but you should exercise extreme caution. We apologise for any incovenience caused.'' He said the lights, now 15 years old, were among the oldest remaining in the city.
