Driving on officer's foot costs man $600
Ernest Smith, of Vaucrosson's Crescent, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to assaulting P.c. Marlo Smith and escaping from custody March 16.
Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said Police stopped Smith's car on Blackwatch Pass in Pembroke around 5.30 a.m.
P.c. Smith was in the process of arresting Smith on a warrant matter when he sped away, driving over P.c. Smith's foot.
Sgt. Taylor said Smith escaped. P.c. Smith sustained bruising to her ankle.
Sgt. Taylor added that the next morning Smith turned himself in to Police when he went to a Police Station to pay an outstanding fine.
Smith yesterday told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that he did not intend to harm the Police woman.
"I'm sorry I ran over her foot,'' he told Mr. Francis. "I didn't know that I did that. It was not my intent to hurt her. I just wanted to return the car to the owners.'' Mr. Francis ordered Smith to pay a $400 fine for the assault and $200 for escaping Police custody.
