Elbow, BIU to meet today
management and the Bermuda Industrial Union.
Government's labour relations officer Mr. Edwin Wilson will try to bring the sides together at the meeting.
Yesterday he said he was optimistic about an eventual breakthrough.
"I am always optimistic. One always has to be hopeful,'' he said.
Today's meeting at Elbow Beach follows the decision to put off a hearing before the Essential Industries Disputes Settlement Board.
Explained Mr. Wilson: "The hearing is on hold pending the outcome of meetings between the two sides. It was a mutual agreement to do so.'' Mr. Wilson said the BIU and management had already met once, with himself acting as mediator.
"They are exploring ways of coming to a resolution. As mediator I am trying to get them closer together.'' Mr. Wilson was unable to say how many meetings would be held before resorting to the disputes board.
"We don't have any long-term plans,'' he said.
