Encouraging locals to work in the hospitality industry

Two commercials encouraging locals to enter the hospitality industry will air next week.

This week the Visitor Industry Partnership and the restaurant and nightclub division of the Chamber of Commerce unveiled the advertisements in a press conference at the Flanagan's bar and restaurant.

The first 60-second commercial is called "Step Into Our World'' and begins in black and white showing a worker in dreary office surroundings.

But it erupts into colour and fast-paced music as he begins to daydream about life as a tuxedo-wearing, hotel maitre'd.

As he moves throughout the hotel he meets -- and dances with -- different hospitality professionals.

And the sentence "There are over 150 types of jobs in the hospitality industry'' scrolls across the screen.

However, he soon awakens back in his office, facing a mountain of paperwork and a computer screen which says, "Job opportunities: Looking for a career change?''.

The final scene shows his empty chair and a contact number for the VIP.

The second commercial, "Make that Change'' is only 30 seconds long and focuses on Food and Beverage careers.

In a rapid fire sequence of restaurant images, numerous professionals cook and present food, and host guests.

And the commercial makes an appeal for people who "have experience smiling, being creative, and are willing to sell happiness''.

It also concludes with a contact number for the VIP and the group promised to give any callers an information package outlining career opportunities.

They will also establish a mentor network of working professionals who will help direct aspiring hospitality workers.

Barbara O'Shaughnessy, deputy chairperson of the VIP, said the commercials were aimed to show both young and old Bermudians the opportunities within the hospitality industry.

The initial commercials -- created by local production company Fresh Creations and director Ian Tucker -- took a year to produce and cost roughly $20,000.

Eventually the VIP hopes to create an entire series of "Partnership and Pride'' ads highlighting positive aspects of the tourism industry.

VIP Chairman Tom Gallagher said the group chose to begin with the food and beverage sector because it had the greatest demand for Bermudian workers.

And he said he hoped the initiative would help not only bring more locals in, but keep them in the industry.
