Environmentalists catch man dumping

Trail as a garbage dump.

The brazen driver -- in a Bermuda Gas truck -- dumped a load of garden refuse and other waste near Warwick Pond as environmentalists mounted a clean-up campaign.

National Trust conservation officer Cathy Gosling said: "While we were there cleaning up a truck came by and dumped garbage.

"It's just outrageous. Works and Engineering have his licence plate number.

And she added: "We are extremely concerned about public truckers who just back their trucks up and dump garbage. Dumping has become a real problem.'' The dirty deed took place around noon on Saturday while a dozen volunteers from Works and Engineering, the National Trust and Keep Bermuda Beautiful cleaned up the Railway Trail near Warwick Pond.

About 70 bags of garbage were collected in addition to an assortment of motorcycle parts, two water heaters/pressure tanks and a washing machine.

Mrs. Gosling said Saturday's three-hour clean-up was prompted by the National Trust's desire to upgrade the Island's protected nature reserves -- Warwick Pond was the first.

"The Trust is trying to do an upgrade of the Warwick Pond Nature Reserve and part of the border is adjacent to the railway trail,'' she explained. "A clean up is the first, easiest and cheapest thing to do.'' She said she and fellow conservationist David Wingate visited the railway trail a few months ago and were aghast at the amount of garbage strewn about the trail.

Works and Engineering Minister C.V. (Jim) Woolridge last night said there was no excuse for anyone to be dumping waste anywhere but the Tyne's Bay Incinerator.

"We have made provisions for the facility to be open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,'' he said. "We have attempted to provide the public with every convenience.

"There is no reason to dump garbage along the Railway Trails.'' DUMP TRUCK -- An unidentified man was caught in the act of dumping a load of garbage along the Railway Trail in Warwick on Saturday. The dirty deed took place while environmentalists were in the process of cleaning up the nature trail.
