Everything must go in Base clear-out
clear-out comes to an end.
Everything -- including the kitchen sink -- is to go. Window frames, fridges, desk and cars will all go on sale. In all, a "couple of hundred thousand'' items left by the US military will be sold to Bermudians as the remnants of the old US Bases are cleared out.
Starting later this month, cars and trucks will be lined up. Then the household gear -- furnishings, refrigerators, office furniture -- will be sold.
Lastly some buildings will be stripped to sell items such as window frames, boilers and even plumbing gear. All the money will go to the Bermuda Government.
"It has to be done in an organised fashion,'' said Mr. Vern Rawlins, the inventory officer of the Land Development Transition Office, co-ordinating the redevelopment of the Base lands.
"Everything that was left was donated to the Bermuda Government and there are a couple of hundred thousand items and I am sure members of the public will be interested,'' he added.
"It is quite a task and it's time consuming because we want to do this right and do it right the first time.'' Vehicles will go on sale on November 28, 29 and 30. The first week of December will see the household sale and it is expected that the rest will be sold in February.
Organisers say that only cash will be accepted for the vehicles which will have duty built into the price.
