Ex-policeman faces fraud charge
stealing a motorcycle while he worked on the Bermuda Police Force's Cycle Squad.
The 24-year-old Bermudian pleaded not guilty to all four charges read out to him and was released on $2,000 bail in his own recognizance.
Marcus Betschart denied that on September 29 he forged a Bermuda Police Force impounded-vehicle index card purporting that he recovered a Suzuki motorcycle registration number AC328 in "stripped condition''.
He denied that on the same date, as a servant of the Bermuda Police Force, he stole the $2,195 Suzuki belonging to Edwina Johnson.
He further denied that between October 9 and 19, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Colonial Insurance Company the motorcycle's value by falsely claiming he recovered it in "stripped condition''.
And he pleaded guilty to selling the same Suzuki to a Warwick man for $1,750 by falsely claiming he owned it.
Betschart's lawyer Mr. Mark Pettingill asked for a mention date in two weeks, saying "it may be that a certain course will be followed at that time''.
Magistrate the Wor. John Judge ordered Betschart to reappear on May 7.
