Ex-soldier admits revenge attack on former corporal

whom he claimed was "oppressive'' will be sentenced on July 21 after a social inquiry report is prepared.

Damon Sydney Peter Smith-Allen, 21, of King Street, Hamilton, pleaded guilty to assaulting Oronde Lawrence and doing him bodily harm on December 20.

Sgt. Donald Grant, prosecuting, said that Allen, who was dishonourably discharged from the Bermuda Regiment, attacked Lawrence while he was at a home on Fenton's Drive.

Lawrence, who was a corporal in the Bermuda Regiment at the time, also worked for Bermuda Cablevision.

Around 3.20 p.m. on December 20 he stopped at a home on Fenton's Drive in a Bermuda Cablevision van.

Allen and several other youths surrounded the van. Once they removed Lawrence from the van they proceeded to beat him with a three-foot pipe.

Fortunately he escaped to a nearby motor repair shop where the Police were called.

In the attack, Lawrence suffered bruises, a swollen left eye and injuries to his back.

Allen said he committed the offence to get back at Lawrence. He denied hitting him with the pipe.

Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp adjourned the matter for a social inquiry report. He will be sentenced on July 21. Smith-Allen was released on $500 bail and a like surety.

Smith-Allen denied assaulting Ronald Mapp on October 30 with other youths.

He will go to trial on this matter on September 1. He was released on bail in the same terms and told to have no contact with Mapp.

Smith-Allen also pleaded not guilty to unlawfully wounding Donald Desilva on October 30.

His trial will proceed on July 9. He is also ordered to have no contact with Desilva.
