Father convicted

in custody on Friday after he was found guilty of three of the four charges he faced.

The 60-year-old father will reappear in Supreme Court in February for sentencing by which time a social inquiry report and a psychiatric report should be ready.

The man was found guilty by a majority verdict of 11 to one on the charges of incest, unlawful and indecent assault and sexual exploitation of a young person by a person in position of trust.

He was found not guilty by the same margin of the charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 14 years.

The nine-woman, three-man jury left the court room at 1.25 p.m. to begin deliberation and announced at approximately 2.45 p.m. that they had reached a majority verdict.

During the trial, they had heard the girl claim that her father sexually assaulted her some time between August, 1991 and December 31, 1994.

She said he had first tried to have sex with her in 1992 when her mother went abroad to Las Vegas.

She said she told her friends about the incident last year and they told her to tell the school counsellor.

Crown Counsel Charlene Scott told the jury that the girl was scarred forever and asked them to exchange places with her.

Defence lawyer Mark Pettingill however urged them to look objectively at the issues as he questioned the girl's reliability as the events had allegedly happened five years ago.
