Father `defends' his son in court
Regiment duties.
Andrew Madeiros Rocha, of Hillsdale Avenue, Pembroke, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to missing various regimental events between March 19 and April 23.
He also admitted skipping five days of extra duty which was scheduled to begin on March 15.
Rocha's father yesterday stood up in court to claim his son had a strong dislike for army duty and did not appreciate officers "getting in (his) face''.
Magistrate Arthur Hodgson replied: "He has to get acclimatised to that sort of behaviour. If Bermuda was at war, he would have enemies right up in his face.'' Rocha's father said if his son was ever in such a situation, he would have the chance to "shoot the enemies before they got too close''.
Mr. Hodgson ordered that a social inquiry be carried out on Rocha. He also granted him bail in the sum of $500 and ordered him to return to court for sentencing on June 15.
