Fined $500 for hitting woman over the head

A story on Page 5 of Wednesday's newspaper identifies a Ms Gina Wilkinson as being involved in an incident in a Hamilton bar. The Royal Gazette would like to clarify Ms Gina Wilkinson (nee Gibbons) of Warwick was not the person involved.

A 22-year-old woman was fined $500 in Magistrates' Court this week after she admitted hitting another woman over the head with a bottle.

Kalilah Phillips, of Friswell's Hill Road, Devonshire pleaded guilty to attacking Gina Wilkinson in a Hamilton bar on July 3.

Crown counsel Leighton Rochester said Phillips grabbed Ms Wilkinson by the throat when she saw her with her former boyfriend.

The prosecution added that Phillips then picked up a bottle and hit it over her victim's head.

Ms Wilkinson was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for minor head wounds.

Phillips admitted to consuming alcohol beforehand and said she did not recall everything she did.

When asked if she had anything to say for herself, Phillips replied: "I have apologised for what I did and I just want this problem to be resolved.'' Senior Magistrate William Francis called the case a "serious matter'', adding that he thought this sort of thing was happening too much these days.

GUN LINK PROVES TO BE FRUITLESS POL Gun link proves to be fruitless A Police investigation into the possibility of a gun found on waste ground being linked to a three-year-old killing has proved fruitless.

Officers had sent a handgun discovered in an area close to where Pembroke resident James Cyrus Caines was shot dead for forensic analysis in Canada.

But a Police spokesman said the 9mm semi-automatic pistol was in such a poor condition that scientists were unable to come to any findings.

The gun was found in the Curving Avenue and Middleton, Pembroke area last April. Police at first thought it may have been linked to the killing of Mr.

Caines who was killed three years ago.

The weapon has now been destroyed.

REMINDER ON GPS ROLLOVER SHI SLG SEA Reminder on GPS rollover Mariners are reminded that at midnight on August 21, the Global Positioning System (GPS) rollover will take place.

The system will reset itself at that time and will read January 6, 1980 unless previously repaired.

This means that the system could stop working altogether or might provide erroneous information to the user.

Current production GPS systems will adjust for the rollover and continue to operate normally. Most units produced in the past ten years will also operate correctly but may need a software upgrade.

Systems manufactured before 1989 are likely to be inoperative after August 1999 as no upgrades are available.
