Speaking at the launch of Fire Prevention Week, the Hon. Sir John Sharpe, Minister in Charge of Delegated Affairs, assured fire fighters that staffing levels will be maintained.

Responding to fears expressed by some of the Fire Service, Sir John said: "I know that the Government and people of Bermuda appreciate the work of the dedicated staff and volunteers of the fire service.

"I would like to assure them that there is no plan, notwithstanding the stringent financial position, to reduce numbers.

"Like everybody else they must control their expenses but the Government accepts that this is one area where they cannot get below their present establishment and provide effective cover.''
