First-time drugs offender imprisoned
bars after importing more than $330,000 worth of cannabis.
Damon Randall Anderson, 28, pleaded guilty in Supreme Court to charges of importing and possession more than six kilograms of the drug on November 17.
He also admitted possessing drug equipment in his home. The discovery of the massive cargo was made when Anderson arrived the Bermuda International Airport from New York.
Customs officers discovered a plant-like material concealed behind a false bottom in his suitcase and in a box claiming to contain computer equipment.
When Police searched Anderson's home on Bulkhead Drive in Warwick the following day, they discovered a further 628 grams of marijuana, scissors and a scale. Traces of marijuana and crack cocaine were found on the scissors.
Defence counsel Mark Pettingill asked Puisne Judge Phillip Storr to take his client's guilty plea and previous record into consideration during sentencing.
"He also has professional skills as an electrician and is able to make an honourable living,'' he added.
Anderson received concurrent five year sentences for importation and possession with intent to supply and a further six months for possession of drug paraphernalia.
