Getting in step with St. George's past
Welsh cobbles.
At present workmen are preparing Water Street for the laying of the new stones, which will give the road an "olde worlde'' look -- just as it may have done in times gone by.
The stones are imported from Wales, UK. Once the groundwork is complete, the Corporation of St. George's will lay the stones down by the middle of February.
Part of the Town Heritage Plan, the preparation work includes laying trenches to take utilities.
Later in the year, it is hoped to extend the scheme further along, in the opposite direction from the Post Office.
Already, Barber's Alley and Custom House Square have been covered by the cobbles.
Nancy Cooper, Corporation of St. George's Secretary, said the work was made possible by a donation from anonymous sources.
