Government canvassers to register eligible voters
voters.
"There are still about 9,000 households that we have not heard from,'' Parliamentary Registrar Mrs. Marlene Christopher said.
"We must have everybody registered this year, so we are sending canvassers out ... to register people in their homes.'' This year it is particularly important for eligible voters to register because the Constituency Boundaries Commission will meet at the end of the registration period to determine if boundaries need to be changed.
And to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered, Mrs.
Christopher will be assisted by Government's Statistics Department which has selected and trained some 140 canvassers.
Many of the canvassers, who will be carrying a briefcase with an official sticker and official identification, have worked as canvassers or interviewers on other Government surveys, including the 1991 Census.
They will visit households that failed to return their Parliamentary Registration forms by the end of last month.
All households, by law, must complete the forms. Those households where there are no eligible voters must submit a "nil'' return.
Canvassers will visit homes through to the end of May. And householders have been urged to cooperate and keep their dogs under control.
There are 26,537 households in Bermuda with an estimated 35,000 eligible voters.
